East Asian Seas Congress 2024 Youth Forum
15-19 April 2024
Location: Korea National Ocean Science Museum, Uljin, Republic of Korea
The East Asian Seas Congress 2024 Youth Forum successfully convened young leaders from across the East Asian Seas region, fostering a deeper understanding of the marine environment, the impacts of climate change, and the importance of sustainable ocean resource management. The forum aimed to place youth at the forefront of innovative solutions for ocean and climate challenges.
Our Hub Leader, Delio Da Costa, participated in this forum alongside 19 other young representatives from 10 countries. The program kicked off with a museum tour and an opening ceremony featuring prominent figures such as Mr. OH Haengnok, Director of Marine Environment Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), Mr. LEE Young-seok, Director of the Gyeongsangbuk-do Pan East Sea Regional Headquarters, and Mr. KIM Jeong-hee, Vice Chairman of the Uljin County Council. The forum comprised several insightful sessions:
- Session 1: Sustainable Oceans and Coastal Management in the Era of Big Data
- Session 2: Enhancement and Utilization of Marine Resources through Modern Science and New Technology
- Session 3: Efforts for Marine Ecosystem Restoration and Marine Biodiversity Recovery
- Session 4: Sharing of Lessons Learned and Experiences as Young Ocean Leaders
We learned from experts from the government and select organizations of the Republic of Korea on various topics, including the use of big data in marine conservation, existing business models that mainstream upcycling of marine plastics, advanced technology promoting the sustainable use of marine resources, and marine mammal field rescue techniques.
Throughout the forum, participants engaged in practical activities such as GIS program practice, small upcycling projects, on-site learning experiences, and beachcombing activities. These interactions facilitated hands-on learning and fostered a sense of community among the young leaders.
“May you seize this privilege and embrace your role and responsibilities as the next generation of coastal and ocean leaders in the East Asian Seas region who will continue to foster healthy and resilient coasts, communities, people, and economies,” said Ms. Aimee Gonzales, Executive Director of the PEMSEA Resource Facility.
Key Learnings from the Forum:
- Understanding Marine Environment and Climate Change Impacts: Participants gained deeper insights into how climate change affects marine ecosystems. They learned about various factors contributing to the degradation of marine environments and the urgent need for conservation efforts. A keynote speech on RO Korea’s Marine Environmental Conservation Policies by Mr. KIM Young Nam from the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (KOEM) was particularly enlightening.
- Innovations in Marine Conservation: Attendees explored exemplary cases of upcycling utilizing marine plastics, led by the social upcycling company USISAN, highlighting innovative approaches to marine conservation.
- Big Data in Ocean Management: The importance of big data in sustainable ocean and coastal management was emphasized. Participants learned how data analytics and modern technology can aid in monitoring and preserving marine biodiversity, with presentations and practices led by Mr. CHO Hong-yeon and Mr. LEE Gi-seop from the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST).
- Youth Empowerment, Leadership, and Collaboration: The forum underscored the significant role of youth in driving change and innovation in marine conservation. Youth representatives shared their organizational achievements and efforts in combating climate change and protecting the marine environment. The forum also facilitated the development of leadership skills and highlighted the importance of collaboration among young leaders from diverse backgrounds to drive impactful changes in ocean conservation.
"Representing Timorese Youth and SOA Timor-Leste, I was able to voice our concerns, ideas, and solutions regarding marine conservation and climate change, ensuring that our perspectives are included in important discussions and decisions. Attending the forum provided an opportunity to connect with other young leaders, experts, and policymakers. I could share successful projects and initiatives from SOA Timor-Leste by the SOA. I was able to gather insights and ideas that can be integrated into SOA TL’s projects, promoting innovation among the global youth community"
